What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is a trance state with increased relaxation, imagination and concentration. It is a naturally occurring state and happens at least twice daily on t he way to or out of sleep. Other times are when we are deep in, for example, reading or watching or doing something we are really interested in.
The difference between our naturally occurring hypnotic trance and the one that happens in the office of a professional is that the first one is naturally occuring, and the later is guided. Once we give permission to the professional, he/she uses hypnotic techniques, like imagery, suggestion and breathing and guides us into a trance state.
During a hypnotic trance, we become focused on the subject at hand and other conscious distractions become secondary, and the subconscious mind is accessible to us and the issues could be worked on.
What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy? Not all hypnosis is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is when hypnosis is used in a therapeutic way to help clients to work on, overcome and release their problems or bad habits. In Hypnotherapy cognitive-behavioral methods or other conventiona theraputic approaches are used to explore issues, change bad habits and create new healthy perspectives.
What if I can't be Hypnotized? No one can be forced into Hypnosis. If a Hypnotic trance is to occur, three requirements would have to be met: 1) You must want to be Hypnotized; 2) You must believe that you are hypnotizable; 3) You must be relaxed and comfortable. By agreeing to be Hypnotized you have met the first two requirements and you can be rest assured to feel comfortable and hypnotizable.
Would I lose control? Do you give up control if you are crying at a movie? The answer is NO. When you give permission to a professional to guide you through Hypnosis you still have the power and control. So there should be no misunderstanding about who has power or control. At any time during a movie you can walk out of the theater or close the book that you are engrossed in.
What happens in a session? First the professional asks you about what concerns brought you to the office. Once a goal is set for the session, it becomes clear that hypnosis would be helpful and you give your permission to be hypnotized, she guides you into a hypnotic trance to help you relax physically and mentally. This process could take from 10 to thirty minutes depending on the individual client and the techniques used. While in a trance the professional uses cognitive-behavioral hypnotherapy and other methods to help you explore habit control or personal problems that need to be changed or resolved or released before session ends.
How does Hypnosis feel? The general feeling is deep relaxation and feeling good. But contrary to popular belief, it is not like sleeping because during a hypnotic trance you are actually hyperattentive and focused on the subject at hand. It is more like zoning-out of the many thoughts that you carry around with you all day and zoning into the one issue that you discussed with the professional. Sometimes the novice to hypnosis don't even believe they were hypnotized and say "but I could hear everything!" Often people feel no different than being fully relaxed, light or floating or completely comfortable and heavy as though sunk into the chair, and they report to feel euphoric and refreshed.
